Advent 3: Repentance
Sunday, December 17th, 2006
Candle Lighting: Light again the first blue candle,
saying “It is for God we wait.” and the second blue
candle, saying, “Prepare the way of the Lord!”
Light a third blue candle.
Question: Why do we light this candle?
Response: We light this candle to remind us of the baptism
of Spirit and fire Christ brings.
Scripture: Read Luke 3: 7-18
Prayer: You tell us what to do:
share what you have with anyone who has none,
be honest in our financial affairs,
be satisfied with what we receive.
Surely You are our salvation;
we will trust and not be afraid.
You remind us of Christ's refining baptism of Spirit and fire:
bring good news to the poor;
proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind;
let the oppressed go free.
Surely You are our salvation;
we will trust and not be afraid.
You tell us that we are blessed:
when people hate us,
exclude us,
revile and defame us on Your account.
You tell us to love our enemies,
do good to those who hate us,
bless those who curse us,
pray for those who abuse us.
Surely You are our salvation;
we will trust and not be afraid.
You call us to follow You:
to the cross,
to the grave,
to resurrection.
Surely You are our salvation;
we will trust and not be afraid.
Burn away all that is within us
that does not serve Your kingdom come. Amen.
Singing: Choose from one of the following hymns:
Come Now, O God of Peace, Geonyong Lee, 1988
Herald! Sound the Note of Gladness, Fred Kaan, 1966
On Jordan's Bank, Charles Coffin, 1763
Proclamation: Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say,
Rejoice. Let your gentleness be
known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything,
but in everything by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
~ Philippians 4: 4-7

Considering Repentance: s When people ask John what
they must do, he give them fairly easy tasks to accomplish to live
out their repentance. What are the easy tasks for us in our time
and place? John also warns us that Jesus demands more from us after
a baptism of Spirit and fire. What are the demands Jesus makes of
you/us in our time and place?
Through the week: At supper each evening,
light the first blue candle saying:
“It is for God we wait.” , the second blue candle
saying: “Prepare the way of the Lord!” and the third
blue candle, saying: “God is our salvation!” Meditate
upon the demands being made of you as a disciple of Christ. Identify
and celebrate a demand you are trying to meet. Identify a demand
you might need help to meet and pray about this.
