Advent 4: Rejoice!

Sunday, December 24th, 2006; Year C

Candle Lighting: Light again the first blue candle, saying “It is for God we wait.”, the second blue candle, saying, “Prepare the way of the Lord!” and the third blue candle, saying, “God is our salvation!”

Light a fourth blue candle.

Question: Why do we light this candle?

Response: We light this candle to rejoice in what God has done, to rejoice in what God is doing and to rejoice in what God will do.

Scripture: Read Luke 1: 39-55

Prayer: You blessed Mary's womb
with Your presence.
You blessed history
with Your companionship.
Do great things for us again:
scatter us in our purposes
that our blindness will lead us to rely on You;
bring us down
that You might lift us up;
make us hunger
for your true bread
that when we greet Your new future
we may leap for joy!

Singing: Choose from one of the following hymns:

Magnificat, Taize,
She Walked in the Summer (The Visit), Miriam Therese Winter, 1968
Tomorrow Christ is Coming, Fred Kaan, 1966

Proclamation:
Stir up Your might, and come to save us!

Restore us, O God;
let your face shine, that we may be saved.

Considering Joy: Mary shines for her courage and her faith in what God is doing. What do you most look forward to seeing God do?

Through the week: At supper each evening, light the first blue candle saying:
“It is for God we wait.” , the second blue candle saying: “Prepare the way of the Lord!” and the third blue candle, saying: “God is our salvation!” and the fourth blue candle saying, "Rejoice in God's love!" Meditate on how your life might be different if God accomplished what you most look forward to seeing God do. What are some ways you might now already begin to live in that reality?
