Second Sunday in Lent - On the Way

Lectionary Year C

Candle Lighting: Light a white candle for Christ and two purple candles.

Question: Why do we light this candle?

Response: We light this candle to remind us that the Way to life will lead us to rejection and death.

Scripture: Luke 13: 31-35

Prayer:

You are on Your Way,
casting out the demonic,
healing,
teaching,
warning,
telling the truth.
You are on Your Way,
calling,
compelling,
longing
for us to follow.
Desire still to gather Your children
under Your wings.
Make us willing to be gathered.
Help us to drop the stones
we too readily want to throw
at You.
Do not leave us to our own devices. Amen.

Singing: Choose an appropriate hymn to sing together, such as:

Jesus Christ is Waiting, John L. Bell, 1984
O Love, How Deep, from 15th c. Latin, trans. Benjamin Webb, 1854

Proclamation:

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

Meditation:

What are the prophetic words Jesus speaks in your life? in your family? in the church? in our world? For those of us in positions of economic security (ie. you have a warm place to sleep, clean water, food and access to medicine and education), who have some influence or benefit from the status quo, the prophetic voice may not be what we want to hear – it will be a voice we want to silence. For the captive and oppressed, the prophetic voice brings good news.
